Is ChatGPT good for homework?

Short answer

Yes, if it is used in Study Mode. Regular ChatGPT writes finished answers, which skips the learning. Study Mode, free on every plan, asks guiding questions, gives hints and checks understanding instead. ChatGPT is for users 13 and older, and on teen accounts parents can set Study Hours so homework chats start in Study Mode.

Regular ChatGPT vs Study Mode

Asked a homework question, regular ChatGPT does what it was built to do: it answers. For a student that means a finished solution or essay paragraph in seconds, and nothing learned.

Study Mode, launched in July 2025 and found under "Study and learn" in the Tools menu, changes that behavior. It asks what the student already knows, breaks the problem into steps, offers hints and quizzes them. It is available on the Free plan.

What it does well

It covers every subject, can teach from an uploaded worksheet or syllabus, and is patient in a way a tired parent at 9 p.m. sometimes is not. For teens, ChatGPT for Teens adds homework reminders that suggest Study Mode when a student appears to be just completing an assignment.

Where it falls short

A student can switch Study Mode off. ChatGPT can also be confidently wrong, especially in multi-step math, so answers should be checked against class notes or a calculation tool such as Wolfram|Alpha. And it is not for children under 13.

How to set it up for a teen

Link a parent account to your teen's ChatGPT account and set Study Hours for homework time. Agree on a rule that regular ChatGPT is off-limits for assignments, and ask your teen to explain the final answer back in their own words.

Is it cheating to use ChatGPT for homework?

Using it to explain a concept or check work is generally treated like using a tutor. Submitting ChatGPT's answer as your own usually breaks school rules. Check the teacher's AI policy.

What age can use ChatGPT?
